Planetoide vernoemd naar Roel Gathier

De Internationale Astronomische Unie (IAU), de organisatie die zich onder andere bezighoudt met de naamgeving van astronomische objecten, heeft een planetoïde vernoemd naar wijlen SRON-directeur Roel Gathier.

De Roel Gathier-planetoïde (voorheen 2005 SD223) is in 2005 ontdekt door T. Pauwels aan de sterrenwacht te Ukkel. Roel Gathier (1953-2016) heeft als managing director van het Nederlands Instituut voor Ruimteonderzoek SRON en als voorzitter van de wetenschappelijke programmacommissie van ESA een belangrijk stempel heeft gedrukt op het nationale en internationale ruimteonderzoek. Ook was hij onder meer voorzitter van de stichting Sonnenborg, museum en sterrenwacht en maakte hij deel uit van het bestuur van Space Expo te Noordwijk.

De officiële bekendmaking is te vinden in de Minor Planet Circular van 31 maart jl. De planetoïde is inmiddels ook opgenomen in het overzicht van ‘Nederlandse’ planetoïden.

Planetoid named after Roel Gathier
The International Astronomical Union (IAU) has named a planetoid after former SRON managing director Roel Gathier (1953-2016). The planetoid was discovered in 2005 by T. Pauwels at Uccle.The official announcement is to be found in the Minor Planet Circular of 31 March

Until his untimely death Gathier was very dedicated to international space research. He played a major role in both Dutch and international astronomy, as managing director of SRON and as chairman of ESA’s Science Programme Committee.
