“In recognition of your valuable contribution to the development and excellent performance of the TROPOMI payload for the Copernicus Sentinel-5P mission,” aldus het certificaat.

NSO certificate of appreciation for development of TROPOMI

On Thursday September 12th, the chairman of ESA’s Earth Observation Program, Joost Carpay, issued a certificate of appreciation on behalf of the Netherlands Space Office (NSO) to SRON’s co-PI team for TROPOMI and the SRON engineers who were involved in the development and realization of the TROPOMI project. “In recognition of your valuable contribution to the development and excellent performance of the TROPOMI payload for the Copernicus Sentinel-5P mission.”

Since the end of 2017, the TROPOMI instrument on board the European satellite Sentinel-5p has been measuring substances in the Earth’s atmosphere such as methane, carbon monoxide and nitrogen dioxide. It provides daily full-coverage global maps of these materials with city-level pixels of only 7×5.5 or even 3.5×5.5 km2. This makes it possible to detect for example methane leaks or the carbon monoxide emissions from the recent forest fires in the Amazon.

Tropomi is a collaboration between Airbus Defense and Space Netherlands, KNMI, SRON and TNO, commissioned by NSO and ESA. Airbus DS NL was the main contractor for the design and construction of the instrument. TNO has been responsible for the optical design. The scientific management is in the hands of KNMI and SRON. Tropomi is funded by the Dutch Ministry of Economic Affairs and Climate, the Ministry of Education, Culture and Science and the Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management.
